4 out of 5 stars Not bad   January 18, 2006

Now I'll admit that I miss John Williams doing the soundtracks... I found his music a lot more playful and somehow just more fitting... having said that I do really like this CD!
The stuff by the Wyrd Sisters (Jarvis Cocker et al) is just silly, it seemed slightly out of place in the film, but sits well as a few stand alone tracks on the CD... and Hippogriff is exceptionally catchy!
I like the music introducing the quidditch teams as well, and Rita Skeeter is an interesting track!
If you've seen the film then the music is very evocative, reminding you of what you've seen... if you haven't seen the film I wouldn't recommend the CD!

Hi all!! Well what a breath of fresh air this was , firstly i have to say i did not like the new potter soundtrack but now i think it is by far the best one ,its much more varied than williams previous. Look out for tracks like the golden egg and harry in winter-Absolutely Awesome tracks!! and the one by cocker - Magic Works! -really does work, love the movie and a great score!!! thumbs up to the scottish composer!!!

5 out of 5 stars Not Williams' work, but still solid.   December 21, 2005

I was a bit aprehensive when i heard that GoF was not going to be scored by John Williams, but when i heard it, I was really pleased with it. Patrick Doyle knew, just like Williams, how to capture the essence of the film, the essence of Hary Potter, and translate it to music. The tracks are really tuny too, they're the kinda songs you go humming when you go to work. So, Potter fans, do not get aprehensive with this masterpiece. It is as good as if Williams himself had done it.

It's abreath of fresh air for the Potter franchise! Hurrah! Now there are going to be some biased comments here because people aren't open minded and think John Williams is the only composer in the world...but its so nice to listen to a Potter CD without hearing bits of Jurassic Park, E.T. and Star Wars in it!
There is a variety of tones here. From light waltzs, to drama, to to action. A nice variety that compliments the constant mood changes of hte film.
The only negative point is that there are themes but not a pariticular "through line" theme. You'll get a tune like Harry in Winter, then its off to something else before it appears again, or so disguised by a different key or arrangement, that is hard to notice its other appearances.
The tunes however are still excellent, and you'll soon have your favourites.
Jarvis Cocker, though I was never a fan, has a lot of fun with his songs. Don't be fooled by the zany start of Do The Hippogriff- it takes a short while to get going, thats all. It calms down after thirtty seconds.
Anyway. Give this a go. You can always send it back if you don't like it :)

Much better than the movie. This soundtrack will be listend longer than the previous soundtracks, because the themes are not so operatic than Williams themes. The downside of this soundtrack is yet, the music is very dark, but there is some romance though.
Highly recommended if you are in the mood.
