1 out of 5 stars Not a toy for children and rating should be changed to 16-18+ rather than 8+   January 1, 2009

Our son (9) was very excited about getting the Spykee robot for xmas and spent quite a long time putting it together with some help.

Connecting to it was no problem at all and using the software is quite easy too, but perhaps not easy for people who don't know how to configure wireless network devices?

Great robot, BUT the thing falls to pieces and I would say that Meccano need to look at going back to using the usual nuts a bolts that they use for other products rather than the plastic "rawl plug" type things. Once you've used them I can't really see a way of reusing them. So to have the option of making three different robots is not really possible.

I have e-mailed Spykee support and have had a reply back to say that they've had a lot of e-mails over Christmas so there will be a delay in responding to my e-mail. This was now 6 days and I think the automated reply speaks for itself so Spykee is now being returned.

I cannot recommended this for children.

4 out of 5 stars Great robot, although not without its flaws.   December 31, 2008

Great little robot, took about 2 hours to put together, although I did take my time. Robot is sturdy once put together although I found a lot of the bolts, even when fully tightened easily pulled out when putting the individual parts together which was frustrating.
Setting up with my pc was straight forward (using Vista), haven't tried controlling it via the internet yet.
The speaker is excellent and when music is played through sounds great although does distort at higher volumes which has to be expected.
My only concern is battery life due to the fact even after a full charge dropped to half way in about 5 mins, but I guess it's a little too early to tell yet as may take a few charge cycles to reach optimum capacity.
Overall a great little gadget more for over 18's than under, unless an adult is going to put it together and set it up.

1 out of 5 stars faulty robot, poor instructions, ripoff company   December 30, 2008

bought this for my girls xmas present
spent 3 hrs setting it up to find it didnt charge properly and wouldnt respond to pc
despite 4 computer-literate adults trying, none could have any joy. The instructions were basic (didnt explain all the light features, say whether battery should flash when charging, etc.). The computer helpline only suggested using phoneline at 1 per min ("even for waiting") and so after 5 days no answer and one little girls xmas spoiled --
Thank you Meccano or Merci Erector (the French owners) this is on much of the software.

4 out of 5 stars No competitors...   December 26, 2008

the best review was written by Mr. Peter Leonard

I want to add only a consideration: it worth more than the current Amazon price (100 pounds).

The actual and only competitor is the Wowwee's Rovio, it is considered less a "toy" than Spykee for some features but it costs almost 270 pounds and fthe main feature of the two robots *checking home from remote location* works almost identically.

Plus, dont underestimate the software: the main app is identical for both OSX and Windows, audio and video works fine on both platform (audio is not supported at the moment by the Rovio for Mac users).
I own a Rovio and like it, but I bought two Spykee not only for the nice price but also because is best suitable for modding (google for "spykee spider mod" ...), also, in some cases (for example: room not lwell ighted) the camera of the Spykee is better than the competitor.

In short: It does his work at an honest price.

just my two cents

4 out of 5 stars Spykee Robot   December 25, 2008

This Robot toy is a must have christmas toy this year, its fun reliable and very very addictive. You can have hours of fun with this. I took my time with this, overall 3 hours to built.

Lets start with the good parts, its great quality very easy to set up and use and most of all its great fun to play and spy on mates and family members in the house. Most of all your are able to control your robot from far distances.

Lets finish on a bad note and with the instruction booklet, this is very frustrating when you are unable to read the actual images let alone the writing itself. Also some of the colours do not fit into the allocated slots, and some dont even go there at all, And so much for the 8+ a 60 year old would not even be able to do this!

Overall i would reccommend getting this toy for play or for show it is a fantastic product, but i would recommend downloading the manual from their website before buying just to get a feel for what your letting your self into, Its a very tricky thing to built and you will need the brain and the time to make the built.
