1 out of 5 stars Do Not Buy   December 29, 2008

Please do not buy - this does not work. I am not buying anything with this brand name on again and will write a letter to National Geographic - are they aware just how useless this is?

3 out of 5 stars Better than expected   December 27, 2008

My son was desperate for a metal detector...I had read the reviews here and was a bit shy about this model. Guess what Father Christmas bought?

Well, we set it up and tried it out in our garden. We found several interesting lumps of metal buried under the grass and our expedition was a success. My son was more than pleased.

The detector will struggle with anything deeper than a few centimetres, and coins need to be close to the machine. Materials and construction are as you would expect. We will try the detector on a beach and I would expect to find something. I think this will be an occasional toy, not an everyday favourite.

3 out of 5 stars Much better than I thought   October 6, 2008

Reading the other reviews, I was pretty worried when I heard that this had been bought for my daughter's birthday. I thought that it could put her off something that she could otherwise take an interest in. Having tried it out though, it's actually fine, and got a lot of interest and play time from my daughter and her visiting friends.

Physically it's typical for a modern toy, quite plasticky and light. It fits together easily and is easy to hold (where the lightness helps for a child). It has two rotary controls: one for on/volume and one for sensitivity. There is an animating display which is lit and spins while it's searching and stops when it finds something, accompanied by a beeping sound.

I found that if I turned the sensitivity up so that it was detecting 'thin air' and then just tweaked it down a notch to silence it then the detector worked very well, being set off by a 2p coin from about 5cm away. I actually used it to find a garden spike for a clothes drier which had become buried by long grass and mud!

The children have had fun testing different materials to see which qualify as metal, and looking for small hidden 'treasures'. I have to say that for the price this is a good toy. It works perfectly well and is fun an easy to use (once it's been adjusted!).

1 out of 5 stars Big metal items fine, small things rubbish   June 30, 2008

Our son was brought this for his birthday - it did pick up large items that we hovered over (i.e. the telephone, the alarm clock etc.) but couldn't pick up our wedding rings or anything small - and if there was anything between the detector and the item - nothing. Not much good when the whole point is to find buried things!! Very disappointing as a working item - more like a "let's pretend" toy. :(

1 out of 5 stars Complete and utter rubbish - don't waste your money   March 10, 2008

This was on the top of my son's Christmas wish list and what a disapointment it turned out to be. I fully agree with the other reviewers here, the detector simply could'nt detect! We placed a variety of objects directly in front of it and on no occasion were they picked up. I thought by buying a product endorsed by National Geographic I was buying a quality item but I was sadly wrong. A waste of money and one sad and frustrated small boy!
